In order to ensure that our programmes are responsive and include the most critically well regarded and talked about exhibitions, we ask you to ‘Save The Date’ and join us for events which focus on emerging artists away from major institutions, including commercial galleries, project spaces and artist run spaces.
As part of our Save the Date programme we are delighted to invite members to join the Contemporary Art Society for an evening at Haunch of Venison, with the curators, at this prestigious gallery in Burlington Gardens.
The exhibition at the Haunch of Venison London will explore the connections between four major artists: Enrico Castellani, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd and Gunther Uecker. This important exhibition will showcase works from 1964 to the present day. All four artists were born within six years of each other (1928-1933) and their practices offer an opportunity to compare the strong aesthetic influences, interests and objectives their generation shared, despite developing on either side of the Atlantic.
Through carefully constructed juxtapositions of work, the exhibition examines how similar problems were addressed and solved by four individuals from significantly different backgrounds. Castellani trained as an architect in Brussels, Uecker went to art school and the Kunstakademie in the former German Democratic Republic, while Flavin and Judd studied art history and philosophy respectively in the US.
Also on display will be the first UK solo exhibition by German painter Jonas Burgert this autumn. Known for his complex and mysterious narrative-style painting, Burgert will present a series of new medium and large-scale paintings. Burgert's inspirations are multiple and derive from diverse ideologies and cultures. They come from post cards and literature, images of the Indian Holi Festival of Colours and from the artist's travels to Egypt, where he visited the remnants of its ancient culture. Another major source of inspiration lies in art history.
Along side this we will see Jamie Shovlin's new project; 'The Evening Redness in the West' is the final instalment in a trilogy of exhibitions which examined the disparity between reality and idealism through an exploration of the narratives and fictions that a nation projects to the world. Taking as its starting point a number of carefully chosen events from recent American history, the interrelated works presented here chart an era of dramatic change in both American and global politics, spanning from the depression of the 1930s to the present day.
