The Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester: Sweet Dis/order

Installation view of 'Sweet Dis/order'
1 April — 12 August 2010
Whitworth Art Gallery The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL

At the heart of Sweet Dis/order is Jane and Louise Wilson’s video Monument (Apollo Pavilion, Peterlee) (2003) which shows Victor Pasmore’s 1960s Modernist pavilion overrun with boys playing. This idea of the disruption of man-made order by natural forces continues through the rest of the exhibition.

Consisting entirely of works from the Whitworth’s collection, a second narrative is written within the exhibition that traces the reciprocal relationships that exist between individuals and institutions, and the ways in which art is given to the Whitworth Art Gallery. Artists include: Jane and Louise Wilson, Basil Beattie, JMW Turner, Lloyd Durling, Anton Mauve, Raymond Teague Cowern, Keith Norman, Richard Forster and Michael Andrews.
