Rachel Goodyear was born in Oldham, Lancashire, 1978. She studied Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University graduating in 2000. She now lives and works in Manchester.

Specialising in the practice of Drawing she has exhibited in the UK and abroad. Her solo shows include ‘they never run, only call’ at the International 3, Manchester and ‘the converging ends were misaligned’ at Pippy Houldsworth, London, 2009. Group exhibitions have included ‘4 Women’, Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, 2009; ‘The Northern Art Prize 2009’ Leeds City Art Gallery; ‘The Drawing Room’, Tate Liverpool for the Liverpool Biennial, 2008; ‘The Intertwining Line’, Cornerhouse, Manchester.

"My drawings present captured moments where characters reside within an existence where social etiquette no longer, or maybe never applied. Stripped of a backdrop, the characters are either plucked from an imagined context, or isolated in a desolate and lonely environment. The detail is intricate, enticing the viewer in for a closer look. Once intimately engaged, more details make themselves apparent, delivering a macabre underbelly - a precarious balance of innocent curiosity and sadistic torment, mixed with a playful dark humour.

Each drawing is created in its own right, but all works share a common language delivering ambiguous tales of fears and desires through an imagined world between awake and dream. Within this world humans and animals explore each other and the world around them with both a sense of curiosity and frustration, with an itch that can’t quite be satisfied. It draws on notions of playful games gone wrong, play descending into violence, tenderness turning into deceit or pain, and a fine line between pain and pleasure. However the images are read, each character seems to be locked in a daze or in a state of hypnosis or somnambulism - seemingly moving through the world with a compulsion and resignation."
