statement

Since the mid 1990's Alexis Harding has subjected painting to a singular physical strain. Making paintings which are undercut by error and doubt and cancellation. The work references 'functioning' high modernist abstract painting, then the paintings react against this position violently. A type of dissolution happens within the changing surface of the work and the painting is set up to fall, twist and react away from this previous state and position; allowing another structure and idea to emerge. Harding has described this reaction as 'agitated and liberating. The paintings have to change themselves to let the world in'.

The paintings are time based where the medium moves and breaks free of the support over a period of months. An urban entropy is at work in the most recent series of paintings; where lines, grids, arrows, numbers and text are used simultaneously. Harding has described these works as 'being grown rather than painted' and 'the practice often aims to side step conventional painting through the use of a series of eccentric devices used to make the work'.
